This exciting new producer is based in Manchuela, a small region in south-eastern Spain. The name Cien y Pico means "Hundred and something" and refers to the age of the ancient Garnacha Tintorera and Bobal vines from which these wines are made.
Cien y Pico `Knights-Errant` is a step up from the Doble Pasta and made from the best fruit at their disposal. The name refers to the winemakers themselves, as well as the tale of Don Quixote, which was set in the same area. The wine was fermented on the skins in open fermenters for 10 days to draw out the Tintorera fruit aromas before spending 19 months in barrel, with 85% in new Radoux oak barrels. About 15% of the blend was kept in stainless steel to ensure freshness, before bottling under screwcap in October 2010.
Cien y Pico `Knights-Errant` is a dark, intense wine. The nose offers a compote of blueberries, blackberries and dark cacao chocolate. Hints of cinnamon, spice and exotic smells of fresh black pepper. On the palate there is strong but soft, intense blackberry fruit - a velvet glove over an iron fist. Dark leather and dry cocoa tannins and an almost chocolate truffled palate, supported by creamy blueberry cheesecake and fresh, uplifting pure blackberry.
